Closing of the Bones Ceremony in Queenstown
A sacred rite of passage
for mothers & women in transition
Honoring the Journey of Motherhood and Beyond
The Closing of the Bones is a cross-cultural rite of passage ceremony rooted in ancient traditions from around the world. It is a deeply nurturing and healing ritual designed to honor, witness, and support a woman’s journey—especially after childbirth, but also through any significant life transition.
This ceremony recognizes the profound transformation that occurs during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. It offers a sacred space for women to be held, seen, and celebrated as they integrate their experiences and reclaim their energy.
The Role of the Rebozo
Central to the ceremony is the use of the rebozo—a traditional Mexican woven cloth, handmade and rich in cultural significance. During pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, the rebozo is used to support and comfort women physically and energetically.
In the Closing of the Bones ritual, the rebozo is gently wrapped around the body in a series of holds and movements that help “close” the physical and energetic spaces that were opened during pregnancy and birth. This process is grounding, soothing, and deeply transformative.
More Than Postpartum Healing

While traditionally held around six weeks postpartum, this ceremony can be offered at any time in a woman’s life. It is especially beneficial after:

-
Miscarriage or pregnancy loss
-
Grief or emotional trauma
-
The end of a relationship
-
Major life transitions or rites of passage
-
Any woman who feels the need to be witnessed, honored, and supported can benefit from this sacred ritual.
A Rite of Passage
Childbirth is a powerful rite of passage—one that transforms a woman physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In traditional cultures, rites of passage unfold in three stages: separation, transition, and integration. The final stage—being witnessed by one’s community—is essential for healing and transformation.
The Closing of the Bones ceremony completes this cycle. It acknowledges the mother’s journey, honors her transformation, and welcomes her into her new role with love and reverence.
Why It Matters
During pregnancy, a woman expands—not only in body, but in heart, mind, and awareness. After birth, she remains open and vulnerable. This ceremony gently calls her energy back into her body, helping her feel whole, grounded, and aligned.
It is a beautiful way to mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of another—with intention, care, and community.
